The midfielder hasn’t played since the Red Devils’ game against Burnley in August. Apparently a series of injuries are what has been holding him back from breaking in to the starting XI. Last season he was farmed out on loan to Fiorentina.

The 26-year-old has been the subject of jokes from team mates and fans about his eating habits and weight. United are thought to be willing to cut their losses on the Brazilian, but his £60,000 a week wages are supposedly turning away any clubs that are interested in signing the player.

“He’s now coming back. He was injured but he’s training now with the team. I cannot say what had happened last year but in my four months here, he’s had a lot of injuries. So I cannot judge him but when he trains he trains at a good level. He’s not always fit and that is more his problem now,” van Gaal told reporters.

“I can’t pick him now because you have to be fit. For the first three months the culture of a trainer is fitness. That is the smallest thing you can demand. Professional league fitness. Fitness is the most important thing. First you have to show your fitness. Not for just one day but for several weeks.”

Meanwhile Manchester United won against Hull City on Saturday, and the three points consolidated their place in the top four going in to December.
