The Colombian international is currently on a season-long loan at Old Trafford from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, and was seen as one of the most exciting signings of the summer when he came in.
However, he has so far struggled to assert himself in the Premier League, scoring just one goal for the Red Devils, who have had an inconsistent start to the season.
Having already paid as much as £6m just to sign him for the season, United are cautious about spending big money on a permanent deal for a player who has so far looked injury prone and off the pace in the English game, despite showing himself to be a lethal goalscorer in other top leagues around Europe.
Falcao will now be hoping to take the chance to prove himself at United, though he is running out of time to do so as he isn’t even guaranteed a starting place at the moment, with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie ahead of him in the pecking order.
