Toffees looking to secure the future of James McCarthy.

Everton are set to offer in form midfielder James McCarthy a lucrative new deal to keep him at Goodison Park as soon as possible, report the Mirror, as interested in the Republic of Ireland international from Premier League rivals Arsenal begins to intensify.

McCarthy missed out on Everton’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur this weekend with an injury, but he is expected to be back in Roberto Martinez’s team in the near future and has formed a fine defensive partnership with experienced former Manchester City man Gareth Barry.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to bring in a defensive midfielder in January and has set his sights on McCarthy, who has come on leaps and bounds under the continued tutelage of Martinez since he joined from relegation Wigan Athletic in the 2013 summer window.

Whilst Everton are desperate to keep hold of McCarthy, however, the report does suggest that they will have to listen to offers that make it beyond £20 million – suggesting that Arsenal and Wenger may just be able to get their man if they are willing to dip their hands deeply into their pockets to secure a proven Premier League performer in the Gunners’ problem position.
