Manchester United are lining up a potential January transfer deal for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, according to Daily Mirror.

Manager Louis van Gaal is said to be eager to strengthen his back four after seeing it succumb to injury and poor form, with the Dutchman sending scouts to watch Godin.

The United boss is also said to be frustrated at his inability to land key defensive targets in the summer such as Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and believes that situation is unlikely to change in January.

Godin is thought to have a £28.5 million escape clause in his Atletico contract which expires in 2018, and would be an easier target to acquire than other names on United’s wish-list.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has said that United would only be active in the January transfer window if top targets became available.

He also insists they club have funds available in their transfer pot despite spending over £150 million in the summer window.

Godin was an essential part of the Atletico side that won the league last season who scored 23 fewer goals than runners-up Barcelona.

His vocal presence would be ideal for a United defence that has looked fragile and without leadership all season.
