The Gunners are looking for defensive recruitment in the January transfer window with the current options for manager Arsene Wenger extremely limited.

Although the likes of Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs and Laurent Koscielny are considered top-class performers and Calum Chambers is an exciting young talent, there is still a distinct lack in depth.

Wenger started the season with just six recognised first team defenders and injuries to Debuchy and Koscielny since has seen youngster such as Hector Bellerin drafted in and Nacho Monreal played out of position.

Schar would therefore seem like the perfect option for the North Londoners, with the 22-year-old having an impressive amount of experience despite his age.

The centre-back has been a regular starter for Basel for some time and has played regularly in the Champions League during his 94 appearances to date for the Swiss champions.

Schar also has nine caps for the national team as well and was part of Ottmar Hitzefeld’s squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
