Manchester United Keen On Signing Of £28m La Liga Centre Back

Louis van Gaal has been impressed by Diego Godin.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is tempted by a big money raid on La Liga in the January transfer window, report the Mail, with the Red Devils reportedly pondering the activation of Atletico Madrid central defender Diego Godin’s £28 million release clause.

One of the stalwarts of Diego Simeone’s side who sensationally won the La Liga title and came within seconds of winning the Champions League last season, Godin has been one of Europe’s most impressive defensive performers over the last couple of years and is also prolific in front of goal for a central defender, with the Uruguayan international offering a genuine threat from set pieces.

Atletico are unlikely to entertain offers below Godin’s £28 million release clause for one of their most crucial players, however, meaning that United have to weigh up the huge financial investment on a player heading towards his thirties with the fact that Godin would almost certainly step in and improve their defence tenfold.

It seems likely that United will sign a central defender in the January transfer window, with German international Mats Hummels of struggling Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund also heavily linked, but a lack of top class centre backs around right now means that they are likely to have to pay through the nose if they want proven quality.
