The young Argentine has filled in for injured duo Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina in the last few games, and has now helped the Gunners to three clean sheets in their last three games with wins over Borussia Dortmund, West Bromwich Albion and Southampton.

Martinez started the season as third choice in Arsene Wenger’s squad, with Ospina signed from Nice to challenge established first choice Szczesny for his place, though injuries have disrupted the Colombian international’s progress in north London.

Martinez is glad he gave it another year with Arsenal, admitting that he held talks with his agent and spoke with his family about the possibility of leaving before deciding to keep on trying for one final season.

The 22-year-old added that he loves the club and is delighted to be playing in one of the world’s best teams, saying: “I spoke to my agent and my family about it and they said ‘let’s wait one year to see if you get the opportunity, don’t rush it.’

“I was still young – I was only 21, I just turned 22 – and I think I did good to stay here. I got the opportunity that my agent and family told me, so I am really pleased about that.

“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world so I am in no rush to leave. I love this club.”
