Rooney missed the midweek clash with Stoke after picking up a knock at the weekend, but the reports from the treatment room have been positive and he has been given a green light to make his comeback on Monday night.

He underwent a scan on Wednesday afternoon in Manchester, which showed no serious damage, and the striker is likely to be fit for the clash at St Mary’s.

Rooney is set to return to light training on Thursday, which is a major boost for United as they look to build on their recent winning run.

The England international has thrived in a deeper playmakers role under Louis Van Gaal this season, and has been in fine form in front of goal scoring five in his last five for club and country.
