Daniel Sturridge’s injury plagued season and the failure of summer signing Mario Balotelli has left Merseyside boss Brendan Rodgers looking for attacking reinforcements in January.

Chelsea have long been linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international, but reports in Russia now suggest that Liverpool are leading the race for his signature.

Doumbia still has 18 months left on his current deal, and CSKA still retain hope that he will sign a long term extension that will keep him at the club.

If that extension doesn’t come however, then a sizeable bid from Liverpool could convince the Russian outfit that now is the time to sell.

Former CSKA coach Valery Gazzaev is a big fan of the prolific forward, and has even tipped him to be the man to replace Luis Suarez at Liverpool following his departure for Barcelona.

“Suarez has really become an important loss for Liverpool. The club’s current performances show how important the Uruguayan was,” he said.

“Therefore the management of Liverpool is now actively looking for a striker who can score and lead the attack, which is one of Doumbia’s best attributes.

“I think Seydou could be one of the best strikers in the Premier League.”
