Why Liverpool Won’t Be Signing Martin Montoya This January

Liverpool are keen to sign another right-back, but will have to look elsewhere…

Martin Montoya has told the press this week said he’s “100%” leaving Barcelona in January, after failing to be given a fair chance to break into the first team, but unfortunately for the defender and for his suitors Liverpool, he may have got his sums wrong.

Barcelona currently have three options at right-back: Dani Alves, Douglas and Montoya. Dani Alves is the undisputed first choice, and continues to perform at an exceptional level, despite his age.

Douglas, signed from Santos earlier this year, was seen as the long term replacement for Alves. However he has been abominable when given the chance, especially in Barcelona’s game against Huesca last week.

Marca described the Brazilian’s mistakes as “legion”. The defender created nothing going forward, missed a sitter and then somehow turned a clearance into a perfect cross for a Huesca forward.

At the moment, it seems as though even an unhappy Montoya is a better option than Douglas as a reserve right-back. The Spaniard has only played one match this year; but at least he played well.

Considering Barcelona may not be able to sign any more players for some time due to their transfer ban, letting Montoya go and leaving themselves with just a 31-year-old Dani Alves and the disaster-zone Douglas would be crazy.
