Liverpool are looking towards Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their bid to bring in defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window, report the Mail, with unsettled centre back Jan Vertonghen the subject of admiring glances from Anfield as the Belgian looks likely to leave White Hart Lane in the new year.

Vertonghen has been thoroughly off colour for Mauricio Pochettino this season having made clear his intention not to pen a new deal with the club in the summer – and it would appear from his performances that the Belgian’s mind is already on a move away from North London, although Spurs would not be happy to sell to a direct rival for the final Champions League places.

Liverpool spent big on central defender Dejan Lovren in the summer as a replacement for Daniel Agger, who was allowed to return to Brondby, but the Croatian international has been unable to replicate his Southampton form on Merseyside and has been culpable for a number of goals this season, with his partnership with Martin Skrtel looking decidedly shaky.

If Liverpool were able to get Vertonghen back to the form that he had shown earlier in his Spurs career and whilst a young player at Ajax, he could represent an extremely intelligent signing – if they are able to tempt him away.
