The Daily Mirror claim that the Anfield side are leading the chase to sign West Ham centre-back Winston Reid, with the New Zealand international out of contract next summer and therefore could be available ‘on the cheap’ in January.

The 26 year old has been in outstanding form this term and his efforts have helped propel the east London side into the top four and the Kiwi is now said to be keen on a high profile move.

Rodgers also has his sights set on Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen according to the Sunday People, with the 27 year old also nearing the end of his current contract.

The adaptable Belgian can play at left-back, the centre of the defence or even as a defensive midfielder, and is a player Rodgers hopes could steady things at the back.

£20m summer signing Dejan Lovren hasn’t impressed since moving to Liverpool and Mamadou Sakho seems out of favour so one can well see why Rodgers would be looking to bring in strong options to improve his back-line.
