Brendan Rodgers is known to be a big fan of £30m rated Argentine Higuain and could see Balotelli’s inclusion in a part-exchange as an ideal way to kill two birds with one stone.

The Anfield side have struggled for goals this term but an outright sale of Balotelli would be a tacit admission of a failed move and therefore the use of the former AC Milan man to secure Higuain would not only cut the costs of a move for the former Real Madrid man it would also happily lead to the exit of the troubled Italian.

Clearly such a deal would only work if San Paolo boss Rafa Benitez felt the gamble worth taking and again this would depend on Higuain’s intentions.

If the 26 year old desperately wanted to leave Napoli then he could of course force the issue by placing a transfer request which could aid Liverpool’s move for his services.

Napoli currently sit in third spot in Serie A, a country mile behind AS Roma and Juventus, though Higuain has started the season brightly having scored nine goals in 14 starts in all competitions this term.
