The 23 year old Italian has looked likely to make his temporary move to join the Black Cats a permanent one over the summer, with a deal between the two clubs agreed, but seemingly Borini fancied his chances of forcing his way into Brendan Rodgers’ plans, especially with Luis Suarez out of the way.

It hasn’t quite worked out that way for the former AS Roma man and having made just one Premier League start this season he may be open to a January exit and it’s one Poyet would gladly assist with apparently.

“I would love to [sign Borini],” he told reporters. “It is difficult to explain [why the previous move collapsed].

“It was a long summer and the things everyone knows, we agreed a price and we flew to America [for Liverpool’s pre-season tour] and he didn’t come.”

Borini impressed during his season at Sunderland, racking up 10 goals and proving a hugely influential member of Poyet’s attack.
