The Blues’ 23 game unbeaten streak came to a shock end on Saturday after a brace from Papiss Cisse put Alan Pardew’s side the win.

It was a tense ending to the match after the dismissal of Newcastle defender Steven Taylor, but despite a goal from Didier Drogba Chelsea couldn’t quite manage to salvage a draw.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was full of praise for the travelling fans at St James’ Park however, which is in stark contrast to the abuse he hurled their way after their lack of support during the win over Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge.

“They were good. They pushed the team, I think they read the game and I think that they saw that the team was trying everything and that they deserved their support,” he said.

“The good thing is that when we start the game next week against Hull City, if they want to sing something the best song that they can sing is ‘We’re top of the league’.”

The loss means Mourinho will be unable to match Arsene Wenger’s achievement of going an entire season unbeaten at Arsenal, the Portuguese manager may have to settle for the Premier League title instead.
