Gunners may be closer to signing West Ham man.

West Ham United have identified a possible signing in defence to replace Arsenal target Winston Reid in this January’s transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.

The Hammers face losing Reid on a free transfer at the end of the season as he stalls on signing a new contract, and it seems that the club are planning for life without him as they ponder a move for Marseille centre-back Nicolas N’Koulou this winter.

West Ham will also accept offers of around £6m for the New Zealand international, whose fine displays in the Premier League in recent times have also seen him linked with Everton.

Reid seems unlikely to extend his stay at Upton Park and could now be on his way to a bigger club, with Arsenal in particular need of improvements in defence after an inconsistent start to the season and unconvincing displays in that part of the pitch.

N’Koulou has impressed in Ligue 1 and could make a strong replacement for Reid in Sam Allardyce’s in-form side.
