The Copa MX – Mexico’s domestic cup – has never been very popular.

It struggles mainly because some of Mexico’s best teams – the ones in either the Copa Libertadores or CONCACAF Champions League – do not take part. Now the league wants to help the struggling tournament by inviting MLS sides to participate.

“If there is a change in the structure it would be by August of next year,” said Liga MX President Decio De Maria. “We have evaluated the possibility of inviting MLS teams and we have begun working to generate a bi-national concept for the cup.”

De Maria also announced the return of the Champion of Champions Cup to be played between the Apertura 2014 and Clausura 2015 Liga MX champions. The match would be played in a neutral venue in the United States.
