The Dutchman accepted that his side were saved by two Robin Van Persie goals against the Saints, but took exception to comments made by Neville saying that Sunday’s game against Liverpool could be like watching “the Dog and Duck against the Red Lion”.

And Van Gaal snipped back at the old fan favourite by saying: “He can say everything because he’s an ex-legend. But as an ex-legend, you have to know what you’re saying.”

“You can interpret that (as you like). It’s not difficult when I say he has to pay attention to his words.”
