The Dutchman scored both goals in his side’s 1-2 win over Southampton on Monday evening, but was under no illusions about the quality of Manchester United’s performance.

“We didn’t play well but this is our fifth straight win and we are on the way up. In the end, we nicked it,” he said.

Southampton have been flying high so far this season, but after a three straight losses in a run of tough fixtures they now find themselves outside of the top four; with many saying the bubble has finally burst.

Saints manager Ronald Koeman admitted that the loss against Manchester City was down to the Premier League champions being the better side, but narrow wins for Arsenal and Manchester United were “presents” gifted to them by the South coast side.

“We deserved more. We didn’t lose to Manchester United. We lost against ourselves,” he said.

“If you give players like van Persie those kind of chances, he’ll punish you. He was given two presents.

“You can talk long about who deserved to win, who played the offensive football, which team did the pressing, but everything is **** because we lost.”

Robin van Persie has been struggling for form lately, but he finally seems to be finding the net again after a poor start to the season. Manchester United appear to be on the rise, and after a disastrous 2013/14 season could find themselves back in the Champions League this time next year.
