Louis van Gaal is confident that AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman will come and join him at Manchester United, although it may not be until next summer, reports the Telegraph.

Van Gaal has been waiting to see how Strootman has recovered from a cruciate ligament injury before deciding whether to make a move for the 24-year-old or not.

The Netherlands international has recently got back into first team action at the Stadio Olimpico following the problem and looks as sharp as ever and will be hoping to help Roma into the Champions League Last 16 at the expense of United’s rivals Manchester City.

Dutch journalist Hugo Borst – who recently wrote a biography of van Gaal – has revealed that the manager and Strootman have shaken hands on a deal to bring the midfield ace to Old Trafford.

Not that his current club want this to happen, with the Serie A side placing a €100m valuation on the Dutchman when they learned of the Red Devils’ strong interest.

In fact some Roma fans have taken to booing Strootman in recent weeks due to his apparent desire to leave Italy for the Premier League and sporting director Walter Sabatini has had to publicly damn the jeers.

City could actually do their rivals a favour in the pursuit of the former PSV Eindhoven man as if the Italians were to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League then Strootman would surely not leave in January.
