Roma are set to make a shock move for Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross according to TalkSport.

Coach of the Giallorossi, Rudi Garcia, is said to be in the market for a powerful defensive signing and the Italian club are now in the process of finding out Shawcross’ availability from the Potters.

Roma were in talks with Tottenham centre-back Vlad Chiriches but reports in Italy now say talks with the Romanian have broken down and the Italians have turned their attentions to Shawcross.

The Stoke captain has made over 300 appearances for the West Midlands side since being sold by Manchester United in 2007 and has been an ever present face in Mark Hughes’ reign at the club, featuring in every game so far this season.

However, the 27 year old recently admitted his frustration at not being able to break into the England team after winning just one cap for the Three Lions, a 16 minute substitute appearance, in 2012.

The centre-back still has three years left on his current Stoke contract but perhaps could be tempted with a move away if it improved his international team prospects.
