Desperate Liverpool’s Defender Search To Continue As Agent Virtually Confirms Martin Montoya’s Juventus Move

The Reds may need to look elsewhere after Juventus appear to have sealed a January move for Montoya…

Liverpool’s interest in Barcelona’s right-back Martin Montoya has been widely publicised, but it looks as if the English club are set to lose out to a European rival.

The full-back has barely featured for Barcelona this term, with Dani Alves still outstanding in his position. Montoya’s agent has been touting the Spaniard around, but Juventus’ interest seems the most concrete.

“Juve? They’re a great club… full of great champions like Pogba. I can’t say if I’ve met the Bianconeri but certainly in the next few days we will have news,” agent Juan de Dios Carrasco told Tuttosport.

That’s about as close as one can get to confirming a deal is done without actually confirming it. Montoya has a release clause of €20m, but the fee is unlikely to be anywhere near that level.

The only thing that doesn’t make sense, and the thing that could give Liverpool hope that the defender’s agent is just stirring up interest in his client, is why Juventus would want Montoya in the first place.

The Italian champions have Stefan Lichtsteiner as their first choice right wing-back, with Martin Caceres as a backup. Lichtsteiner has been fantastic for the Old Lady in recent seasons, and is reportedly on the verge of signing a new deal. Montoya offers now of the same aggressive wing-back play that the Swiss international does.
