Manchester United have suffered yet another major injury blow, with the news that defender Chris Smalling will be out until at least Christmas after limping out of their game against Southampton on Monday.

Reports in the Daily Mirror confirm that the England defender will miss a minimum of the Red Devils next two games, starting with Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.

Smalling came off after 18 minutes of the 2-1 win against the Saints earlier this week, and it was feared he could be facing a lengthy spell out with the muscle tear. Those fears have since been calmed, but he will be out for the next fortnight.

United hope he will be back in time to face Newcastle at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, which follows a visit to Aston Villa six days earlier. It’s the third injury Smalling has sustained already this season, with the player having already suffered groin and thigh issues.

The loss of Smalling is another personnel blow to United boss Louis van Gaal, who has had a multitude of defensive issues to cope with this season, and who is already without Phil Jones and Rafael.
