Arsenal look to have recalled defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin from his short-term loan deal at Charlton in an attempt to help ease their defensive crisis.

The young Frenchman was seen in Arsenal training on Friday morning but Arsenal and Charlton Athletic have yet to confirm the move.

The Championship side just recently announced the 23 year old would be remaining on-loan with them until the end of December.

Coquelin is a defensive midfielder by trade but can play as a full back, playing at left-back in Arsenal’s 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Southampton earlier this season.

The Arsenal young gun returns to North London at a time of crisis in defence for the Gunners with Per Mertesacker the only recognised centre-back available for the visit of Newcastle to the Emirates Stadium this Saturday.

Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal are injured and Calum Chambers is suspended following a red card at Stoke last week.

Arsenal youngsters Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Stefan O’Connor and Gedion Zelalem, who featured mid-week against Galatasaray – as well as young defenders Semi Ajayi and Isaac Hayden also trained with the Gunners first team.
