The Italian giants want to keep the 30-year-old after his fine performances have been key to the club’s success in recent years, though Arsenal are known to be big admirers of the player.

Lichtsteiner is in the final year of his current deal in Turin, and is free to talk to foreign clubs from January onwards with the view of completing a free transfer away from the Juventus Stadium at the end of the season.

Arsenal would dearly love to strengthen their struggling defence with the addition of a proven player for no transfer fee, but the Gunners’ interest could spark Juve into action as they open talks to keep the defender at the club.

It is also claimed that Arsenal are weighing up a big-money bid for another Juventus star, 21-year-old midfielder Paul Pogba.
