United have been heavily linked with a move for Dutch international Kevin Strootman in recent months, with Louis van Gaal known to be a huge fan of his compatriot.

Roma seemed determined to keep hold of the tough tackling midfielder, but after the Serie A side were eliminated from the Champions League by Manchester City on Wednesday, it was thought they could be convinced to sell.

But while Roma’s sporting director Walter Sabatini admitted that missing out on the last 16 of the Champions League was a huge financial blow, they would not be forced into selling anyone in January.

“Strootman? Unless we get presented with an indecent offer, he’ll stay with us. We can’t give him up,” said Sabatini.

Manchester United are believed to be lining up a £30m bid for Strootman, whether or not that will be enough to convince Roma to sell remains to be seen though.
