The Dutch international joined the Serie A side last year for £15m, but has seen his stock continue to rise since his move.

Louis van Gaal is known to be a huge fan of Strootman, with the Manchester United boss having worked closely with him during his time managing the Netherlands national side.

The no nonsense midfielder was thought to be keen on reuniting with his former manager, but he could be tempted by Jose Mourinho to make the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Roma have no desire to sell the box-to-box man, but if a big enough offer comes in then they may have no choice but to accept. With the Italian side seeing themselves knocked out of the Champions League after losing to Manchester City in midweek, they may also be under more financial pressure to sell in January.
