The 29 year old Senegal international has scored seven Premier League goals this term despite starting just four fixtures and Etihad Stadium boss Manuel Pellegrini will offer £20m for the forward as he seeks to cover for the loss of Sergio Aguero for a sustained period with damaged knee ligaments.

The Magpies paid £11m for Cisse in January 2012 and Alan Pardew would not want to lose the forward having seen the damage that can be afflicted to a club through the sale of a key performer.

Pardew saw his side nosedive last term after losing Yohan Cabaye to PSG and a similar fate could befall the St James’ Park side if they lose their top-scorer.

Man City will sorely miss Aguero, who is set for at least two months out, and may well now regret having loaned out forward Alvaro Negredo to Valencia.

The Premier League title holders can still call upon Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic but the addition of another goal-scorer would not go amiss though it’s worth noting that Cisse is likely to be part of Senegal’s 2015 African Nations Cup plans in January and February.
