The Old Trafford side are ready to make an £88m bid for Real Madrid man Bale but could have more luck with a move for Dutch international Robben, a player van Gaal knows very well indeed.

Van Gaal brought Robben to Bayern Munich in 2009 and the winger was a regular in the national team set-up throughout the Man United manager’s reign as Dutch coach.

One imagines that despite any strong relationship the pair share it would take some persuading to lure Robben away from the Allianz Arena.

Robben has tasted a high level of success since moving to Germany, racking up three Bundesliga titles and a Champions League triumph in his five completed seasons during which time he has scored 97 goals in 181 appearances.

Though van Gaal brought in Angel di Maria to boost his wide-attacking options he doesn’t appear to have his full faith in the likes of Adnan Januzaj, Juan Mata and Ashley Young and clearly either Bale or Robben would be superb additions.
