The Premier League champions made the surprise move to bring in the former Chelsea midfielder on loan for the first half of the season, signing him from MLS side New York City FC.

The 36-year-old has perhaps made more of an impact than expected after initially only joining to keep his fitness up, and Pellegrini says the former England international has become an important player in his side this season.

Speaking about the possibility of extending Lampard’s stay at the Etihad Stadium, the Chilean tactician said that he hopes it can be done without too much trouble as he is happy with the player’s impact for his team so far this term.

“I think Frank is a very important player for us and I hope we will not have any problems for him to stay here,” he said.

“I hope we can have a decision as soon as possible.”

Lampard has scored five goals in thirteen appearances for City, including a late equaliser against his old side Chelsea in their Premier League meeting earlier in the campaign.
