Gunners target a deal for Benedikt Howedes.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is once again looking to Germany in his bid to strengthen the Gunners in the January transfer window, with the Mirror reporting that the Frenchman is eyeing up a £15 million move for experienced German international defender Benedikt Howedes from FC Schalke 04.

Howedes is surprisingly only 26 years old, but that hasn’t stopped the versatile performer from picking up almost 200 senior appearances for Schalke, the only senior team that he has represented, whilst he has also been capped 32 times by his country.

Such experience at a good age does not come cheap, which is why the report indicates that Wenger would have to authorise an outlay of around £15 million to lure Howedes away from Gelsenkirchen, with Schalke and Roberto di Matteo having received the huge boost of Champions League progression with a narrow victory over Maribor this week.

One of the most concerning facets of Arsenal’s disappointing start to the season has been a lack of depth at the back, with right back Mathieu Debuchy having to fill in at centre half during this weekend’s thumping victory over Newcastle United, meaning that Howedes could be a very intelligent capture – the German can play either in the centre of the back four or at left back.
