City boss Manuel Pellegrini wants to keep the former England international midfielder for the rest of the season if possible, but it is thought that the 36-year-old is wanted back in the US for the start of the MLS season.

Lampard made the surprise move to City on loan this season after a long career with Chelsea, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer and one of their finest ever players.

Still, he has performed well with rivals City this term and has won over fans and team-mates alike with his fine performances, which could now lead to his loan deal being extended until the Spring, when it had initially been planned to finish in January.

Lampard has six goals and one assist so far this season, and shows no sign of slowing down with age.
