The Dutchman has guided his new side into third place in the Premier League, despite a slow start to the season and a number of less than stellar performances over the last few weeks.

“I think Van Gaal will realise that he’s been fortunate so far in his Premier League season to be in third place having played so poorly. But having got the team into that position he must now feel confident,” he wrote.

“He knows he has players coming back, he will have a stronger defence in the second half of the season and Manchester United are likely to get better.”

Van Gaal will certainly have to get his team playing to their full potential if he wants to kick on and improve, but to be in the position he is after such a poor start will certainly give him confidence.

They will be looking to continue their good run with a win against Liverpool this Sunday. The Merseyside club are struggling for form as well, but have been unable to find the wins they need and are currently sat in ninth place.
