Gunners representatives watched on as Howedes captained Schalke to a 4-0 win over Stuttgart and the World Cup winner may be the ideal man to help strengthen Arsene Wenger’s Emirates Stadium defence.
The £15m rated German international can play at left-back or in the centre of the defence and is a hugely experienced campaigner who could be open to a fresh start having represented Schalke since the age of 13.
Arsenal have recently had to call upon Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy to fill in at centre-back and the north London side could well do with a strong defensive signing in January.
Schalke’s draw against Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League could perhaps hasten Howedes’s departure if he were to feel that such a tie was a bridge too far.
