The Premier League leaders play against Championship Derby County on Tuesday night, and it could be seen as a game where the Portuguese will attempt to rotate his squad. However, the ex-England man doesn’t believe that he will do this.

In his first spell at the London club the 51-year-old placed importance on the competition, and Le Saux believes that he will do so again.

“It was the first trophy he won with Chelsea,” he said speaking as a representative of Capital One, who sponsor the League Cup.

“I’m sure he enjoyed that experience so much and once you’ve tasted it you want to experience it again. It’s something that I’m sure they’re as focused on as all the other competitions they’re in,” he added.

The Blues have faced their first problems of the season recently, losing for the first time in the campaign to Newcastle United and drawing to Sunderland. The former left-back thinks that the lower division side have an opportunity against the team.

“For Derby there is the opportunity to prove to themselves that they’re more than capable of competing against players of the calibre that Chelsea have,’ he continued.

“The template that Sunderland and Newcastle used against Chelsea is a great opportunity for (Derby boss Steve) McClaren to look at that and use the same blueprint,” he concluded.

The match kicks off at 20.00 on Tuesday.
