Although the 29-year-old usually plays as a forward, he was in central midfield in the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday. He performed well alongside Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini.

The Norwegian thinks that the England skipper can play in the role more often and continue to play well.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match the former Cardiff City manager said, “I think we found a new position for Wayne Rooney, every day he looks more and more like Paul Scholes.”

He added, “The difference today was on 20 minutes when Mata and Rooney adjusted their positions slightly with Mata in behind (Steven) Gerrard and (Joe) Allen and Rooney dropping off, getting on the ball. United needed someone to get on the ball and that’s what Rooney did.”

Whether the former Everton player will continue in the role is unknown though. After the match manager Louis van Gaal said that in the next match he could be playing as a striker again.

“But maybe next week Rooney is a striker again, but not a goalkeeper I think,” he joked when asked about where Rooney could play against Aston Villa.
