The 21-year-old would be perfect for the Red Devils at the moment, as they have suffered an injury crisis amongst their defensive players. They are also not particularly strong in the area when their squad has a full bill of health. The centre-back would have been an improvement on their current options at centre-back.

“We were close to an agreement with Manchester United,” he told Telefoot. “My mom speaks English and this facilitated the translation.

“There was also an interesting project [on offer] but I made a choice for my career. I think I can go higher and mark my generation. I would be happy to tell myself I did the maximum and went as far as I could during my career.”

His former manager Jose Mourinho also revealed details of how the transfer happened. The now Chelsea boss also mentioned the interest of Manchester United in the Frenchman.

“I was on vacation,” the Portuguese explained. “La Liga was over. I was in Madrid and Zinedine Zidane shows up with a DVD.

“I looked at the player and I was very happy with what I saw. Manchester United wanted him but Real Madrid was very strong in this deal.”

Varane recently signed a new contract that will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2020. He has recently been competing with Sergio Ramos and Pepe for a place in the first XI.
