Now a pundit for the BBC, he thinks that the Old Trafford club’s lack of European fixtures means that they have a chance at finishing first in the league. If it were to happen, it would be similar to when Liverpool finished second last season while benefitting from the lack of mid week matches.

Louis van Gaal’s side have won their last six games to take them in to third place. Phil disagrees with his brother Gary, who has written off his former team’s chances.

When asked about their chances of becoming champions, the 37-year-old said, “Yes, they can. At the moment, they’ve got the momentum and you just never know.”

“There are similarities between United this year and Liverpool last year, where Liverpool had no Champions League football. They’ve got no midweek games in Europe and, if teams slip-up, you just never know,” he continued, speaking to BBC Radio Five Live

Man Utd’s next two fixtures are against Aston Villa and Newcastle United, so they could well extend their run of victories for the foreseeable future.
