The Italian has been a complete flop since arriving at Anfield in the summer. He has only scored two goals in all competitions, and none in the Premier League so far. The fact that he had already been linked to a move away despite only going to Merseyside four months ago illustrates the extent of the forward’s failure.

However, Serie A giants Inter Milan have cooled any talk that they will definitely be offering the 24-year-old a way out of England. Club vice-president Javier Zanetti revealed the difficulties involved in any possible transfer to Sky Italia.

“A Balotelli return? We all know Mario is a great player but I think it’s difficult because he only just arrived at Liverpool,” he said.

“In any case, after our game against Lazio (December 21) we will hold meetings to see what we can do and what is needed in terms of the (transfer) market.”

This will apply the brakes on any departure from Anfield for Balotelli, and so will put more pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers to make the signing perform. The Northern Irishman does not need this with his job already under threat because of the terrible start to the season made by the Reds.
