It had been thought that the midfielder would miss the game because of a groin injury picked up in last Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle United. However, both the club and the player are becoming more confident that he will be able to play in their next match against rivals Liverpool.
Before this news, the North London club had been preparing to use Santi Cazorla in a deeper role in midfield to make up for the missing England international. This will no longer be necessary, and this will at least take one problem off manager Arsene Wenger’s mind. Injuries to Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey do mean that the squad is still thin in the central midfield area.
The Gunners travel to Anfield to face the Reds on Sunday, and they will want to win to both keep up in the chase for the top four and to consign Liverpool to another week in the bottom half of the league.
