Sterling struck first, scoring his first ever headed goal for Liverpool, and it was certainly an improvement on his finishing against Manchester United last weekend.  Lazar Markovic swings in a ball from the left, opposite wing-back Jordan Henderson heads back across goal and little Sterling is free to guide it deftly into the corner:

Markovic then proved that he deserves more chances in the Liverpool first team. Philippe Coutinho finds space down the left, he cuts in to test Artur Boruc with a low shot, the ball spins out to Markovic 15 yards out, and he has the composure to side-foot home:

Sterling got his second at the start of the second-half, as Liverpool began to look back to their best. Again Bournemouth are their own worst enemies though, losing the ball high up the pitch and then leaving midfield empty for a swift Liverpool counter. Sterling picks up the ball, he twists and turns inside the area, leaving Tommy Elphick in a spin, before sliding a shot into the far corner:

But their defensive frailties were once again exposed just six minutes later. Fingers will be pointed at Liverpool keeper Brad Jones, who allowed Dan Gosling’s shot go through him. Drilled in left-footed from 12 yards, should be easily held:

But despite a couple more late scares, Liverpool held on to ensure that they progressed.
