The 26-year-old has been out since October with a serious knee injury, but has made it clear that he is close to a return to first team action. This will be a big boost to manager Arsene Wenger, with the Gunners currently trying to make up for a poor start to the season over the festive period.

“I am working every day to get myself fit and I am on the right path now,” the Germany international told the club’s official website.

“It won’t be much too much longer before I am back on the pitch. I hope to be back training with the whole team again as soon as possible.

“After a time, you really miss playing football. You miss the ball and just want to play. When you watch the games and think that you could have been playing, and playing well, it makes you miss it, but that’s the way things are.”

However, the midfielder will not be fit to make it in to the squad for the North London club’s clash with Liverpool on the weekend. The match will be a big test of both sides’ top four credentials, and they will be looking to put a dent in each other’s chances of qualification to the Champions League.
