The wantaway Dutch defender thinks his teammate can go on to be a White Hart Lane legend…

Jan Vertonghen, who has recently been linked with a host of clubs including Liverpool, Man United and Arsenal, has been discussing his teammate Christian Eriksen.

Defender Vertonghen believes his teammate, who he also played with at Ajax, is on course to be a true great at Spurs.

“As a playmaker, I think he can be one of the best in the Premier League,” Vertonghen is quoted as telling Sky Sports.

“I’ve played with him since he was 16 or 17, so probably for six or seven years now. He’s improving every season.”

His improving performances mean that the midfielder could one day match the achievements of Luka Modric and Rafael van Der Vaart – two modern Tottenham greats who have since moved on.

“He can reach their level, 100 per cent,” the Dutchman continued.

Eriksen has been vital in Spurs’ recent change of fortunes. The Danish playmaker scored vital late winners against Everton and Swansea City, taking his total for the season to six.

The 22-year-old also played an important role in Spurs’ convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night, with his immaculate set-piece delivery leading to Jak Alnwick’s error for the first goal.
