The 24-year-old’s move to Old Trafford had been in doubt due to his current club becoming angry with the constant furore over his star player’s future.

However, the fact that they have dropped out of Europe’s premier competition means that he may now be allowed to move. At the very least, the Red Devils hierarchy believe that it should make a difference to the situation.

The central midfielder will apparently cost upwards of £30 million. He could be one of two signings at the club, with manager Louis van Gaal apparently also wanting a centre-back to make up for both positions that they were unable to strengthen in the summer. Ron Vlaar is thought to be a main target for the Dutch coach in this position.

The Mancunian team have currently on a run of six wins in a row, and will be looking to make it seven against Aston Villa on Saturday. This run of form has got them in to third in the Premier League and led to talk of them challenging for the title.
