The Spaniard spoke in depth about the club’s work in the transfer market this summer, explaining why fan-favourite Angel Di Maria was allowed to leave the club for Manchester United, whilst also commenting on midfield transfers such as the signing of Toni Kroos and the exit of Xabi Alonso.

It has now emerged that Kroos was brought in from Bayern Munich because Khedira would not sign a new contract at the Bernabeu, strongly suggesting that Real have been planning for his departure for some time.

Perez said: “Di Maria left because he wanted to go. Xabi spent ages pondering over his future, he’s 33 years old and it’s difficult to retire at Real Madrid. Other better offers emerged. Raul did something similar and we had no problem with that. Kroos came in as Khedira didn’t want to renew.”

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League on a number of occasions, though it remains unclear whether he will leave Madrid this January or wait until the summer when his contract expires.
