The Reds striker has scored just twice since he arrived at Anfield last summer and yesterday was banned for one game for post an picture on social media with anti-Semitic language.

Liverpool’s form since his £16m arrival over the summer has also taken a downturn, something that both fans and pundits alike have attributed to the Italian international’s contribution.

But Sampdoria owner Massimo Ferrero, who is also a film star and director in Italy, has opened the door for Balotelli to return to his home country.

“Mario was massacred by the media and people and didn’t have anyone to protect him,” Ferrero said.

“He needs some humility and if he decides to come to a lesser team like Sampdoria he would return to playing well.”

However, Samp may face a tough battle to land his signature as former club Inter Milan are also rumoured to be keen on snapping him up.
