The Reds want to bring in a top class replacement for Luis Suarez as soon as possible, with summer signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert failing to make an impression at Anfield so far this season.

Daniel Sturridge has also been a big loss through injury as Brendan Rodgers’ side struggle to repeat the fine form that made them genuine title contenders last season, and Benzema seems to be top of the club’s list of priorities this winter.

The French international has long been one of the best centre-forward players in the world and has enjoyed a distinguished career at the Bernabeu.

Still, it is thought that the Spanish giants would be willing to let the 26-year-old leave the club for the right price, and Liverpool hope a bid of £50m could tempt them into letting him go in the middle of the season.
