Luke Shaw has given Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United a massive boost, with the youngster set for a Boxing Day return at Old Trafford after recovering from injury…

Manchester United star Luke Shaw could be set for a Boxing Day return, with the summer signing set to return from ankle ligament damage suffered in the win against Arsenal last month, reports the Mirror.

The summer signing suffered a nasty injury against the Gunners in November, but is back in training and could be set for a start against Newcastle United on December 26.

Ashley Young has been filling in as a makeshift left-back during Shaw’s absence, and while he has performed well in a position he is not used to, his defensive failings have certainly been noticeable at times.

Although the 19-year-old is back training already, having been out of action for five weeks, United’s trip to Villa Park at the weekend will probably prove too soon for him. Louis van Gaal will be hoping to get him back before the New Year.

Shaw made the switch to Old Trafford this summer, but hasn’t gotten off to the start he might have hoped. His Red Devils career has been blighted by injuries, with a hamstring problem causing him to miss a number of fixtures earlier this season.

With the club currently in the midst of a defensive crisis however, he will be a huge boost to van Gaal on his return.
