Wenger spent wisely, and freely, over the summer and bucked the trend of recent seasons in doing so and has spoken of his willingness to continue doing so now that his north London side are on a more firm financial footing.

“There is a huge difference between the perception that people have of me and [the reality]: I’m not scared to spend money,”

“If you go out with me one night, you will understand that.” he playfully added, before continuing;

“What I don’t like is to spend money that I don’t have.

“Now I have money so no problem spending it at all. What I fought against was spending money that would have put the future of the club in danger.”

Arsenal spent over £70m on new additions over the summer and, perhaps more tellingly, didn’t sell any crucial first team stars and as such are now in a position of mounting genuine title challenges which in many ways puts more pressure on Arsene Wenger to land major silverware with a top four finish not being enough to satisfy the club’s fan-base.
