The German international scored in his side’s latest defeat of the season, a 2-1 reverse against Werder Bremen on Saturday, but is clearly unhappy with how the team is playing at the moment as they head into the second half of the season facing a genuine fight against relegation.

With Dortmund recently winning two Bundesliga titles in a row and reaching the Champions League final in 2013, it is certainly a shock to see them struggle so much this season.

Jurgen Klopp had to cope with the exit of star striker Robert Lewandowski in the summer, and it may be that the club will continue to struggle as the likes of Hummels and Marco Reus are linked with exits.

The 25-year-old won’t have helped cool speculation with his latest quotes, as he said: “We’re all trying to work out what’s behind it all. It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic.”
